What Washington requires on your label

The label maker below handles all of this for you. Here is the checklist it follows, straight from Washington's rules.

   Business name of the cottage food operation

   Your registered business name.

   WSDA permit number

   Since 2020 the permit number replaces your home address on the label, a deliberate privacy protection.

   Name of the cottage food product

   e.g. "Marionberry Hand Pies".

   Ingredients in descending order of predominance by weight

   Include sub-ingredients of compound ingredients.

   Net weight or net volume

   Weight or volume of the contents.

   Allergen labeling

   As specified by director rule.

   Nutritional labeling if any claim is made

   Only triggered by nutritional claims.

   Required statement in 11-point contrasting type

   Exact wording below, at least the equivalent of eleven-point font in a color providing clear contrast to the background.

• WSDA individually approves each label during permitting.
• RCW 69.22.020(4) says cottage food may not be sold by internet, mail order, or for retail sale outside the state. WSDA reads this as a shipping ban: you can take orders and accept payment online, but the product must be picked up or delivered in person inside Washington.
