What Michigan requires on your label

The label maker below handles all of this for you. Here is the checklist it follows, straight from Michigan's rules.

   Business name and address

   Or, if registered with the MSU Product Center (voluntary, one-time fee), your operation name, telephone number, and registration number instead of the address.

   Name of the cottage food product

   e.g. "Cinnamon Rolls".

   Ingredients in descending order of predominance by weight

   Include sub-ingredients of compound ingredients.

   Net weight or net volume

   MDARD guidance shows both customary and metric units as good practice.

   Allergen labeling

   As specified by federal requirements.

   Nutrition labeling if any nutritional claim is made

   Only triggered by claims like "low fat".

   Required disclaimer

   Exact wording below, in at least 11-point type in a color that provides clear contrast to the background.

• The disclaimer must be at least the equivalent of 11-point font in a color contrasting with the background (MCL 289.4102).
• The 2025 PA 51 amendment (effective March 24, 2026) kept the disclaimer and font rules while raising caps and allowing internet, mail-order, and third-party delivery sales within Michigan.
• If you use the MSU Product Center registration instead of your address, the label must carry your name, phone number, AND registration number.
