What Maryland requires on your label

The label maker below handles all of this for you. Here is the checklist it follows, straight from Maryland's rules.

  1. 1
Name and address of the cottage food business
Or, with a free MDH-issued identification number, your business name PLUS phone number plus the ID number instead of the home address.
  2. 2
Name of the cottage food product
    e.g. "Smith Island Cake Slices".
  3. 3
Ingredients and sub-ingredients in descending order by weight
    Include sub-ingredients of compound ingredients.
  4. 4
Net weight, count, or net volume
COMAR allows weight, count, or volume; MDH's example shows ounces plus grams.
  5. 5
    Allergen information
    Per federal labeling requirements.
  6. 6
Required disclaimer in 10-point contrasting type
Exact wording below, 10 point or larger in a color clearly contrasting with the background (COMAR 10.15.03.27).
  7. 7
    Retail food store sales additionally
Phone number, email address, and the date the product was made, plus MDH written approval.
  8. 8
Nutrition information only if you make a claim
Triggered by nutrition or health claims.
Required wording, added to your label automatically
Made by a cottage food business that is not subject to Maryland's food safety regulations.
  • The MDH ID-in-lieu-of-address option requires your business name AND phone number to appear alongside the ID number.
  • MDH guidelines (updated November 2025) accept one- or two-piece labels; refrigerated baked goods remain prohibited (SB 701 did not pass).
